Description of Pictures: Inside Media: Read My Pins : Guest: Madeleine Albright
As the first female U.S. secretary of state, Madeleine Albright made history and news. While serving as the nation's chief diplomat, she used various pins as a signature diplomatic tool.
When the government-controlled Iraqi press referred to Albright as an "unparalleled serpent" after she criticized Saddam Hussein for refusing to cooperate with U.N. weapons inspectors, she wore a pin in the shape of a serpent at a later meeting with Iraqi officials. Observers stated: "She sent a message as old as the United States, ‘Don't Tread on me.'" From then on, Albright used pins to convey ideas and feelings without speaking.
Join Secretary Albright for a discussion about her new book, "Read My Pins: Stories from a Diplomat's Jewel Box," and the compelling and often humorous stories behind her unique pin collection.
A book signing follows the program.
